New ways to help cities accommodate more people through better infrastructure—called hyperdensity by architects--will be the topic of noted architectural iconVishay Chakrabarti’s Feb. 8, 2010 talk at NJIT. The event, sponsored by the NJIT College of Architecture and Design (COAD), is open to the public and will be held in Weston Hall (Summit and Warren streets) at 5:30 p.m. Parking on the street and in the NJIT Parking Garage, Summit St. will be available. For more information, call (973) 596-3080. Support for this series has been provided by the multi-national construction company Skanska http://www.skanska.com/ Chakrabarti’s talk will focus on ways to improve mass transit systems, new mixes of residential, commercial and retail programs and better and more viable green and public spaces. Chakrabarti directs the real estate development program at the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, Columbia University (GSAPP). He was a founder of the architectural firm VCDC in NYC. This event is part of an ongoing evening lecture series at COAD. It brings nationally and internationally recognized architects, academics, and allied professionals to NJIT to discuss their current work and developments in the profession of architecture. Lecturers bring a diversity of experience and viewpoints to our students, faculty and the greater university community. The series has been chaired since 2004 by Richard Garber, associate professor at NJIT, and continues to bring noted guests such as Thom Mayne, FAIA; Stephen Kieran, FAIA; William Mitchell, and Stan Allen, AIA to the school. Since 2007, an endowment established with the American Institute of Architects New Jersey Chapter (AIANJ) has increased the breadth of the lecture series by allowing for the establishment of the AIANJ Endowed Lecture each April and a symposium each fall. The 2010 Endowed Lecture will be presented by Bernard Tschumi, FAIA. Recent symposia have included “Material Evidence,” which explored how new technologies were shaping the notion of architecture as a material practice; New Jersey/Netherlands (NJ/NL), which introduced ways in which two of the densest states in the world engage issues of development, transportation, and smart growth; and “Information Models in Contemporary Practice,” which studied the impact of Building Information Modeling (BIM) on the practice of architecture.Increasingly, lectures are being archived for their repeated use as important teaching tools within the school’s curriculum. This lecture series is registered with the AIA Continuing Education System (AIA/CES) and offers learning units which may be self reported. The New Jersey School of Architecture is accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) and is in compliance with all criteria standards.NJIT, New Jersey's science and technology university, at the edge in knowledge, enrolls more than 8,600 students in bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in 92 degree programs offered by six colleges: Newark College of Engineering, College of Architecture and Design, College of Science and Liberal Arts, School of Management, Albert Dorman Honors College and College of Computing Sciences.
