Southeast Asia: Art of a Cultural Crossroads

When: Tuesday, September 16, 2008 - Wednesday, December 31, 2008

Where: Newark Museum

For well over two thousand years traders, pilgrims, explorers and adventurers have traversed the islands and landmasses of Southeast Asia.  Historically people traveled by boat, whether sailing the Indian Ocean or South China Seas or paddling the currents of the famed Irrawaddy, Chao Phraya or Mekong rivers, and with the travelers’ successive waves of outside influence have continuously lapped the shores of present-day Indonesia, Cambodia, Malaysia and the Philippines.  The works of art in this gallery provide a glimpse into the rich artistic legacy of five major world religions viewed through the cultural lens of Southeast Asia.  Indigenous forms of nature and ancestor worship as well as Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam and Christianity have all had dramatic and lasting effects on the diverse peoples of Southeast Asia.  Not only do artists and artworks travel between regions, but also local artists translate significant religious images and concepts into distinctive forms unique to each locale.  Arresting woodcarvings inlaid with mother-of-pearl or glass beads illustrate worship of one’s ancestors and the forces of nature.  Rough volcanic stone-carvings introduce stately figures from the Hindu and Buddhist pantheons.  An elegant Arabic inscription marks one of a range of powerful swords and daggers whose ivory and golden hilts comprise a crucial accessory that denotes social rank for ceremonial costume throughout Southeast Asia.  Brightly painted and exquisitely carved wooden statues present popular Christian Saints.  Separately, each grouping provides concise counterpoints of individual religious traditions while together they underscore the art of life in the land below the winds.
