Gaslight Brewery

Style: Bustling brewpub in downtown South Orange with a giant copper beer kettle in the window.

Don’t Miss: Several freshly brewed beers and ales on tap, also available as a sampler. Warm up with beer-cheese soup, unexpectedly light but satisfying ($5). International wurst platter includes German bratwurst, Polish kielbasa, bauernwurst, and more ($21.95). Tangy lemon-herb roasted chicken is served over linguini ($14.50). Sandwiches are a strength. Two of the best are baked ham and brie with roasted vegetables on toasted focaccia ($8), and jalapeño turkey with Swiss ($7.50).

Heads Up: The bar area rocks on game nights—enough screens to show several sporting events at once, plus darts, shuffleboard, and a jukebox. For peace and quiet, best bet is rear dining room. Reservations recommended.

The Scoop: Family operated, the Gaslight Brewery opened in 1998, and has become a magnet in the revival of a downtown that includes the South Orange Performing Arts Center and a slew of specialty stores and restaurants near the train station.
