Rutgers University’s more than 12,000 graduates will get to hear an extra special commencement address this year delivered by none other than the President of the United States of America himself, Barack Obama.
RU president Robert Barchi confirmed the news this morning, saying the speech will make history as the university continues its year of celebrations marking its 250th anniversary.
“This is the first time in Rutgers University’s history that a sitting president has agreed to speak at commencement,” Barchi says. “President Obama’s decision is a testament to the enthusiastic efforts of Rutgers students, faculty, staff and alumni, as well as members of the New Jersey Congressional Delegation, who sent numerous messages to the White House urging the president to join our 250th anniversary graduation ceremony.”
President Obama will address more than 52,000 attendees during the Rutgers University-New Brunswick Commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 15 at 12:30 pm at High Point Solutions Stadium in Piscataway.
