(1906–1997) Changes brought about by the U.S. Supreme Court in the 1950s and ’60s will always be associated with the chief justice, Earl Warren. But William Brennan, a Newark native whose father was an Irish immigrant, was the guiding force behind many of the court’s decisions. He served for 34 years, becoming one of the most influential associate justices in U.S. history.
