Ridgewood residents are going wild for sourdough. Not just loaves of bread, but baked goods such as doughnuts and cinnamon buns, all from Black Magic Bakehouse, the newest bakery downtown.
The bakery opened in March, but the woman behind the dough, Deanne Veliky, 30, had gathered a dedicated following long before doors opened.
Right before the pandemic, Veliky moved from California back to Bergen County, where she regularly sold her baked goods at pop-ups and took custom orders. All her products are naturally leavened, meaning there is no commercial yeast used, and it’s all sourdough based.
Soon, she began selling her pastries in Hillsdale at a popular event called Sourdough Sundays, held at the Barista’s Touch. “We started gaining more and more traction every week,” she says.
Demand for her goods grew, and she eventually moved into a space on West Ridgewood Avenue. “Everything just really lined up, and the space itself is everything I’ve ever wanted,” she says of the new digs, which includes a coveted, cozy corner spot.
Veliky’s baked goods continue to bring people together, so much so that the bakery, which changes its menu daily, sells out within hours of opening. Be sure to get there well before noon.
