New On The Scene

Desserts, Asian bowls and burgers.

Is the world acquiring a collective sweet tooth? Or is it just New Jersey?

Something to ponder, for sure, as another dessert cafe opens in our state.

This one is Zai’s Dessertery, and it’s located at 343 Depew Street in Dumont. Its subtitle is “Macarons and More” and its owner-chef is Zainab Ilyas, who was born in Sri Lanka and came to the United States as a new bride.

Early fans praise the multiple incarnations of the macarons, which come in a Crayola-spanning array of colors, not to mention a vast assortment of flavors, as well as the cupcakes and bar-style cookies.

The pastry chef offers this message on her Web site: “Zai’s Dessertery is a community-based cafe, and we used all local-based businesses to establish this beautiful and cozy place.”

Open daily, except Mondays. 201-771-7000; zaisdesserts.com.
