Humorist Fran Lebowitz penned that sentiment on behalf of all those who can’t bear to hear the fish specials. Whatever cut you prefer, you won’t have a beef with this cross- section of choices:
Edward’s Steak House, 239 Marin Boulevard, Jersey City (201-761-0000). A restored brownstone sets the scene for prime New York sirloin, rib eye, and Kobe beef.
Epernay, 6 Park Street, Montclair (973-783-0447). Choices abound at this BYO: tartare, hanger, or côte de boeuf; au poivre or Roquefort. With advance notice, on weekdays Epernay offers Wagyu beef, Kobe’s American cousin.
Sammy’s Ye Old Cider Mill, 353 Mendham Road (Route 24 West), Mendham (973-543-7675). Prime and choice beef is dry-aged on site for 21 days at this landmark. The T-bone and porterhouse for two, served family-style, are big hits.
Strip House, Westminster Hotel, 550 West Mount Pleasant Avenue, Livingston (973-548-0050). Choose prime filet, rib chops, or a double porterhouse broiled at 1,400 degrees. The $29 cut-of-the-night-special is
a bargain.
What’s Your Beef, 21 West River Road, Rumson (732-842-6205). Order the filet or New York sirloin by the ounce, and the grill man will cut and weigh it in front of you.
The Palm, 2801 Pacific Avenue, Atlantic City (609-344-7256). This American favorite has arrived at the Quarter at the Tropicana. Savor a New York strip and family-style veggies in a clubby setting.
