Perfect Pies to Try Around the Garden State in Honor of Pi Day

Here's where to find excellent pies around New Jersey.

Yes, we know Pi Day (March 14) is really a celebration of the mathematical Pi (3.14159265…), but we also enjoy any excuse to indulge in a nice slice of pie. So in honor of Pi Day, we’ve rounded up a selection of great bakeries around the state where you can find exactly that.

Erie Coffeeshop & Bakery


Owner and pastry chef Renee Faris is a master of baked goods. After studying at the Institute of Culinary Education in Manhattan, she worked stints at Carlo’s Bakery in Hoboken (where she appeared on “Cake Boss” seasons 1 and 2) and Gramercy Tavern in New York before opening her own place. At Erie Coffeeshop & Bakery, opened in May 2015, Faris makes a variety of seasonal small-batch baked goods—scones, muffins, custom cakes, doughnuts, cookies, and yes, pies. Mara’s Cafe & Bakery


Last July, Mara’s Cafe & Bakery closed its Denville location, citing financial hardship as the reason. The closure shocked its loyal customers, who loved Mara’s, in part, for their excellent selection of baked treats. But in January, a former customer swooped in to revitalize and reopen it, and the pies are just as good as ever. Celebrate the bakery’s return by grabbing a slice of pecan, apple or peanut butter mousse pie. 25 East Main Street, 973-625-0901

Penza’s Pies at the Red Barn Cafe


Located in a picturesque 120-year-old red barn, Penza’s Pies at the Red Barn Cafe has been serving an impressive collection of desserts for more than 40 years. Penza’s housemade pies have earned a loyal following, with many customers stopping in to grab one on their way to and from the beach. Standout pies include those made with local Pine Barren blueberries and cranberries. And when in season, the strawberry rhubarb pie is a stunner. 51 South Myrtle Street, 609-567-3412

Ventnor No. 7311

Ventnor City

Owned by Kim Richmond and Cookie Till (of Steve and Cookie’s fame), this small-batch bakery is a haven for all-things sweet and decadent.  In addition to scones, biscotti and cakes, Ventnor No. 7311 offers a beautiful selection of pies (5-inch for $10, 9-inch for $25): pecan, brownie, peanut butter, coconut cream, banana cream,  ricotta cheese and other seasonal selections. 7311 Ventnor Avenue, 609-246-7097

The Pie Store


Though it’s known more for its savory British pies, the Pie Store in Montclair also makes excellent dessert pies. The key lime pie is a customer favorite, but the mini apple, blackberry and raspberry pie looks just as good—and is available year-round. 100 Watchung Avenue, 973-744-4424
