Dig In At Savour Café In Sparta

Yummy sandwiches, salads and baked goods make this a hidden gem worth finding.

Savour Café is a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it spot set slightly back off the road in a tiny nondescript strip mall. Keep your eyes open because it is a hidden gem.

The nicely appointed bistro offers a handful of tables to enjoy the all-day breakfast, fresh-fruit smoothies, soups, salads, sandwiches, burgers and baked goods, although there seems to be a steady stream of customers taking the casual, yet upscale fare as takeout.

All menu items are organic whenever possible and made with fresh-from-the-farm produce. Free-range eggs appear in the omelets and quiches, as well as an interesting dish of eggs baked in avocado halves. The open-faced smoked salmon sandwich, served with a generous amount of sun-dried tomato cream cheese, an English muffin, arugula and tomato salad is another great and healthy way to start the day.

Several special soups are available daily, but we opted to try the ground turkey and kale on the regular menu, which turned out to be a little bland despite being chock-full of vegetables and brown rice.

The five meal-sized salads can be layered with broiled salmon, grilled chicken or shrimp, and all the dressings are made on site with grape-seed oil and freshly squeezed lemon juice. The arugula, roasted red pepper, slivered red onion and feta cheese popped with a flavorful passion-fruit vinaigrette.

Panini sandwiches, like sliced apple and brie on a baguette and a wonderful corned beef Reuben, are crispy and delicate without a trace of greasiness, although the former could have had a bit more Dijon added.

Other sandwiches include hearty options like grilled pork loin, broiled tilapia and portobello mushroom, and there are bison, salmon and turkey burgers on fluffy brioche buns.

The dessert case is the first thing you see even before being greeted by the friendly staff.

Chocolate cake

Danish pastries, tarts, cakes and gelatos, as well as a number of gluten-free options, remind customers to leave room for a sweet finale that pairs well with a pot of tea, cappuccino, espresso or latte.
