The only reason we previously made the trek to Denville, an adorable town, was to have Denville Dairy’s ice cream. With the opening of The Grill on Broadway, we now have a new dining option in the area.
This storefront restaurant, which opened in May, serves upscale American food in a space that has tables set far apart and an open kitchen. The décor is basic with white tablecloths and napkins, wood floors, an exposed ceiling and black and white pictures on the walls. A beautiful aqua-blue water bottle, which is placed on the table adds some color to the space, but plants or flowers would elevate the ambiance.
The menu has starters to share such as charcuterie, hummus and a flat-bread pizzeta. We opted for a beautifully composed salad that combined greens, charred cauliflower and Brussels sprouts with raisins, walnuts and a tomato vinaigrette. It was full of textures and flavors from the crunch of the walnuts and sweetness of the raisins playing off of the dressing. I was sorry that I agreed to share it with Lowell!
After we had our salad, we realized that we were not served bread. When we asked the waitress about this she told us she serves bread if it is requested. In any case, the bread is not worth asking for. It consisted of three warm tasteless rolls offered with olive oil or butter.
A lovely piece of crispy skin salmon was surrounded with diced pickled beets, peas, mushrooms and a squash-saffron sauce; a most colorful dish. Equally impressive was a generous and well-prepared portion of tender short ribs paired with olive oil mashed potatoes. Both dishes were speckled with microgreens. Other dinner options were fresh cavatelli pasta with peas, tomatoes, garlic white wine and pecorino cheese; roasted chicken; burger, rib eye and grilled tuna.
The one dessert we shared was notable. Homemade vanilla ice cream and squiggles of caramel sauce topped a phyllo dough tart encased with cinnamon flavored apples. Three other house made offerings were on the menu: mini donuts with a dipping sauce; coconut panna cotta with strawberry compote; and warm chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream and raspberry sauce.
The Grill on Broadway is open Tuesday through Saturday for lunch and dinner.
