Your Guide to NJ’s Holiday Train Shows

All aboard for fun at this season's model-train shows and sales.

The model-train hobby combines the joy of collecting with design talent and electrical engineering skills. For hobbyists—and those who simply enjoy watching a beautifully detailed locomotive pull a line of boxcars, coal dumpers and tankers around a meticulously landscaped layout—the holiday season brings a busy schedule of train shows, rides and sales. Here’s a train-show timetable for the coming months in New Jersey.

Christmas Express with Santa Claus!

Thru December 22

Allaire State Park, Wall Township

A holiday tradition for more than 35 years. Santa rides the Christmas Express and talks to every child on the train. Call ahead to check availability; these events sell out. 

Daytime rides: December 21–22; 11 am–4 pm. Fare: $6.
Nighttime rides: December 21; 6–8:30 pm. Fare: $6.

17th Annual Antique Toy Train Show

Thru February 2

Museum of American History
138 Andaloro Way, Deptford

Thursday–Sunday; 10 am–3 pm. Admission: $4; children, $3.

62nd Annual Model Railway Show

Thru January 5

Garden State Model Railway Club
575 High Mountain Road, North Haledon

Walk-around HO layout, plus Thomas train and refreshments.

Saturdays and Sundays only; 1–5 pm. Admission: $6; under 12, free with adult.

29th Annual Model Train Exhibit

December 30

Barron Arts Center
582 Rahway Avenue, Woodbridge

Weekdays, 11 am–4 pm; weekends, 2–4 pm. Closed Christmas day. Free.

Holiday Spectacular & Christmas Train Display

December 21–22

InfoAge Science Center

Hands-on layouts, Santa and snacks.

Noon–5 pm. Admission: $7; kids, $3.

Brick Train Show

December 29

Brick Elks Lodge 2151

Dealers, operating layouts, repairs and refreshments. 

9 am–2 pm.

Admission: $6; under 10, free.
