Heaven in a Cup

Memorial Day weekend marked the unofficial start of summer. For me that means two things: Trips to the Shore and cups full of ice cream.

Ask anyone in New Jersey, and I’m sure they have their favorite mom-and-pop ice cream shop close to home and down the Shore. As an ice cream lover, I was fortunate to enjoy both this weekend.

Before heading down the Shore, I picked from a choice of over 48 flavors of homemade ice cream at Gabriel’s Fountain in Martinsville. Although the restaurant and ice cream store, owned by Al and Marilyn Montesano, is open year-round, I made sure to kick off summer right with a cone of their Jersey Shore-flavored ice cream. The vanilla ice cream is dyed blue, to represent the ocean, and spiked with graham crackers, like the sandy beach, and has chocolate candies shaped like rocks. Heaven and the beach in a cup!

Leaving late Friday night we avoided the Shore traffic and had just a two-hour drive to Avalon, where I relaxed, soaked up some sun and got more ice cream! Last Saturday, while many of my friends went to the sold-out performance of Beyonce at the new Revel in Atlantic City, I made sure to hit one of my favorite Avalon haunts, Sundae Best.

Just like Gabriel’s, Sundae Bests’ flavors and sundaes are made right on the premises.

Unlike Gabriel’s however, Sundae Best is only opened seasonally, and is run by Kim Yerks and Ed and Cathy Galante. In Avalon, I didn’t try any crazy concoctions but settled on my go-to flavor, chocolate chip cookie dough. Once again, heaven in a cup.
