Growing up in Little Falls, Steve Pullara faced taunts from schoolmates for repeating the fifth grade. Such torment has paid off in an unexpected way for the 55-year-old music producer. His recent CD, All About Bullies…Big and Small, is up for a Grammy for best children’s album.
Pullara, who has written and produced children’s music for almost 25 years, says he came up with the album’s concept while brushing his teeth. “It hit me that this would be a great recording idea that could help kids,” he says.
Working with fellow producer Jim Cravero, Pullara created All About Bullies, a 37-track compilation of songs and poetry. The CD features Blue October, Steve Van Zandt, Eric Bazillian (formerly of the Hooters), actress/singer Heidi Swedberg and May Pang (known for her books about John Lennon). Also included is a track by Steve Pullara and His Cool Beans Band, recorded with original E Street Band drummer Vini “Mad Dog” Lopez.
The album’s profits will benefit the Pacer Center’s Kids Against Bullying, an organization that raises awareness about the issue and helps children who have been bullied (pacerkidsagainstbullying.org).
Pullara and his team will attend the 54th Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, which will air at 8 pm on February 12 on CBS.
