Attention all sailors: Row, row, row your boats—gently, please—down to Beaton Boat Yard in Brick on the 18th for the New Jersey State Rowing Championships, the country’s largest lifeguard surfboat race (rowrace.com).

The seven-mile race on Barnegat Bay, a benefit for the Ocean County College sailing team, starts at the Mantoloking Bridge and finishes at the bayfront beach in Seaside Heights. The vessels can be just about anything a sailor can row or paddle. “As long as you possess the skills and the equipment needed to complete the race safely, you can join in,” says Rich Schlatter, the race director.

Schlatter expects about 150 people to participate, and because the race is open to all ages and skill levels, he says, “I’m hoping it’s going to be our biggest competition yet.”
