NJ Transit riders will soon see a silver lining to their summer commutes.
Governor Murphy announced Thursday that all customers will get free fares for the week of August 26-September 2 as a thank-you for riding and for dealing with frustrating transit delays and breakdowns this year.
“Understanding that our commuters have faced many disruptions this summer, we are providing a one-week fare holiday for NJ Transit riders,” says Murphy. “As we work diligently with Amtrak to investigate and address the issues that have occurred this summer, especially on the Northeast Corridor, we hope this fare holiday offers our commuters some relief.”
During the fare holiday, all fares will be waived across the NJ Transit network, including buses, trains and light-rail lines.
Monthly pass holders who already purchased an August pass will automatically receive a 25 percent discount on their September monthly pass purchase.
Murphy says NJ Transit recognizes the impact that service issues have had on riders over the past few months and remains committed to improving the travel experience.
As many of the recent service disruptions have occurred on Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor, which NJ Transit shares, both entities have been working to improve service on this critical rail line—the busiest corridor in the country. Some of that actions include more equipment inspections, inspecting and repairing overhead wires, track signal systems and substations.
NJ Transit is working with Amtrak to expedite the replacement of substations, overhead wires, and transmission and signal lines.
