Style: Three terms describe the food of this strip-mall Mexican eatery: simple, hearty and house made. Order at the counter, grab a drink from the fridge, and owner Ruben Nuñez or his wife will bring you your meal.
The Scoop: Nuñez, a native of Mexico, cooked at many Mexican eateries in Jersey before opening his own a few years ago. His wife works with him while their young children play in the dining room.
The Menu: Ordering is easy. Choose a format: tacos (above), burrito, quesadilla, rice bowl or chilaquiles bowl. Then pick one of 11 proteins, including al pastor pork, beef tongue, shrimp or spicy chopped tofu. More in the mood for a torta? Choose from five kinds. Appetizers include shrimp cocktail, guacamole, and nachos. There’s a special entrée for each of the six days of the week El Pueblo is open. Drinks include creamy horchata. For dessert, choose from tres leches cake, flan or chocoflan—half chocolate cake, half flan.
