Kabab Paradise
Lake Hiawatha
76 North Beverwyck Road
973-334-7900

Open: Lunch and dinner, daily

Price: $

Style: Fast-casual halal with a small take-out area and an adjacent dine-in section with wooden tables and chairs. Hanging yellow lamps and Afghan art on the walls contribute to an exotic vibe.

The Scoop: Open since 2003, Kabab Paradise is owned and operated by the Saleh family. A second location in South Bound Brook is run by a different owner, but the family oversees the operation and supplies the ingredients.

The Menu: There’s a variety of Afghan-style dishes as well as American classics, including burgers, wings and sandwiches. Among the most popular items is the mixed gyro platter. It combines lamb and chicken gyro with sautéed onions, peppers and mushrooms over Kabuli rice with shaved carrots and raisins. It’s topped with a zesty yogurt sauce. Kabab Paradise uses strictly halal meat, including in the deep-fried Solar Wings and the burgers, which are named after planets. The Mars Burger stacks mushrooms and sautéed onions with Swiss and American cheese atop two beef patties.

Heads Up: Stock up on the excellent homemade sauces, including the green chanti sauce, made with spicy cilantro and vinegar.
