Homemade Dominican Delicacies at Lula’s Empanadas in Haddon Heights

The empanadas at Lula's are cleverly sealed and branded so you know exactly which fillings are inside—from cheese steak to buffalo chicken to curry chickpea.

STYLE

Homemade Dominican empanadas served from a quaint window for takeout, or dine in the small, pink-and-flamingo-themed outdoor area with two picnic tables.

THE SCOOP

Named after the owner’s mother, Lula’s has been selling empanadas in South Jersey and Philadelphia since 2021 through catering and vendor gigs. Its storefront opened in July.

THE MENU

Empanadas here are one of a kind. Crispy and non-greasy, they are cleverly sealed and branded to identify their fillings—which is helpful when you order different types. Some of the Dominican-fusion flavors include Thai sweet-chili chicken, buffalo chicken, and BBQ pulled beef. My favorite is the Philly cheese steak filled with red bell peppers, onions and cheese.

Tasty vegetarian options include curry chickpea and scallion-and-cheese empanadas. There also are gluten-free yucca bites, potato-like pockets with fillings. End with a sweet guava, fig and brie empanada, topped with powdered sugar. Most importantly, don’t skip out on Lula’s sweetened iced tea: refreshing with just a touch of spice.
