Style: Portuguese/American barbecue joint with 10 tables and additional seating at the counter. Photos of the Portuguese countryside adorn the walls along with a flatscreen. A poster of the Portuguese national soccer team is mounted behind the cash register.

The Scoop: Stephanie’s, open more than a decade, is named for owner Paul Sousa’s daughter. It has locations in Elizabeth, Roselle Park, Newark and Hillside.

The Menu: Start with warm, crisp empanadas, chicken or beef. Entrées involving chicken, steak, pork and sausage come in large portions, most with two sides (choose from yellow rice, fries, beans, boiled potatoes, salad and mixed vegetables). Lightly salted barbecued meats are roasted in a charcoal pit, giving them a pleasing smokiness. Most popular are chicken shish kebabs and tender ribs, beef or pork (pictured). Barbecue sauce is served on the side. Barbecue combo platters are available in two sizes. Seafood dishes include tilapia, cod, salmon and shrimp. Sandwiches such as pulled pork, steak, fish fillet and chicken come with French fries. Desserts range from flan to tiramisu to carrot cake.
