Style: Historic, dimly lit basement eatery, with Italian-influenced bar food in a saloon-like setting. Tiffany-style lamps illuminate dark wooden booths, nostalgic items decorate the walls and locals gather at the bar or at the pool table in back.
Don’t Miss: Appetizers range from sweet or garlic mussels ($8.99) and crabmeat-stuffed mushrooms ($7.99) to hot, honey, BBQ or teriyaki wings ($7.29). A trip to the Sussex Inn isn’t complete without one of their renowned calzones, which are oversized and generously stuffed with veal, meatballs, sausage, pepperoni or vegetables ($10.99). The Inn also offers a variety of chicken and veal dishes—saltimbocca, picatta, marsala and Francaise—chicken, $16.99, veal, $18.99. If you hanker for pasta, don’t pass up lobster- and ricotta-filled ravioli with garlic-cream sauce ($14.99) or the Union House Pasta, a penne dish sautéed in olive oil with fresh spinach, roasted garlic and sundried tomatoes ($14.99). Dinner choices also include sandwiches, burgers, ribs and steaks.
Heads Up: In good weather, sit on the patio, which overlooks the picturesque outskirts of Sussex.
The Scoop: Built in 1843 and originally named the Union House, the building reflects to the days of horse-drawn carriages, before Route 23 paved the way for city folk to come to the country. The former hotel is now a private residence that rents rooms on a monthly basis.
