164 West Main Street
Open: Lunch and dinner, daily
Price: $$ BYO
Style: A cozy sushi restaurant serving hibachi meals and a wide array of rolls. Accents of Asia—a large decorative fan, wooden trellis and Japanese music—add to the atmosphere. From the five-seat sushi bar, diners can watch the chefs. Seating is also available at six booths and two tables. Takeout is a popular option.
The Scoop: Named for Japan’s second largest city, a major port, Yokohama Sushi is flanked by ethnic eateries in downtown Somerville’s emerging restaurant row.
The Menu: Don’t miss the volcano roll (with orange squiggles of spicy mayo). It encloses whitefish, kani (imitation crab made from fish), avocado and eel in nori (seaweed paper). The roll is deep-fried, yielding a distinctively crisp wrapper. We also enjoyed the samurai roll: shrimp tempura and cucumber wrapped in nori and rice, topped with avocado and eel (in center of photo). There are 10 hibachi dinners, including salmon, lobster tail, steak and chicken. Each is served with teriyaki-glazed veggie stir-fry, shrimp and fried rice.
Heads Up: If the fried volcano roll works for you, try the fried ice cream. Choose from vanilla, red bean or green tea ice cream in tempura dough. The fried dough is at once crispy and chewy, a fun treat. There are daily lunch specials, such as three basic rolls for $10.45.
