In 1954, Caribe Hilton bartender Ramon “Monchito” Marrero was tasked with creating a fun, refreshing drink that conjured the tropics. The drink has quenched thirst ever since—and in 1978, Monchito’s piña colada became the official drink of Puerto Rico. Try one!

  • 2 ounces rum
  • 1 ounce cream of coconut
  • 1 ounce heavy cream
  • 6 ounces pineapple juice
  • 1/2 cup crushed ice
  • Pineapple and cherry to garnish (optional)
Mix rum, cream of coconut, heavy cream and pineapple juice in a blender. Add ice and mix for 15 seconds. Serve in a 12-ounce glass; garnish with fresh pineapple and a cherry.
