NJ Consignment Shops: We Just Can’t Get Enough

Savvy shoppers know how to get the good stuff for less...

Tried & True Consignment in Mendham, NJ
Rack after rack of designer goodies at Tried & True tempt NJ consignment shoppers.

If you’re a New Jersey bargain hound, you’re lucky to live in a state that’s chock-full of consignment shops, thrift stores and re-sale boutiques. We love buying everything from women’s, men’s and kids’ clothing and shoes to home decor and furniture at consignment shops.

One of the Garden State’s best second-time-around boutiques is Tried & True Consignment in Morris County. Located in the Kings shopping plaza in Mendham (88 East Main; 973-543-1857), the store opened just two years ago but has a loyal following that attracts shopaholics who hail from as far away as California.

“Our consignors and customers come from nearby towns as well as Princeton and Manhattan,” says shop owner Kaden Bernstein of Mount Olive. “I also have about 20 loyal buyers who visit Mendham from the West Coast each year, and they love the store.”

The spacious boutique, always filled to capacity with clothing, handbags, shoes and jewelry, carries must-have, high-end labels like Louis Vuitton, J. Crew, Free People and Anthropologie. Recently, Bernstein also began carrying a limited selection of decorative housewares including tabletop ceramics and glassware.

“Tried & True is not your mother’s consignment shop. It’s a fun atmosphere with music and large fitting rooms. Whether you love the hunt or are in desperate need of some fashion tips, we’re here to help. We take shopping therapy to a new level with attentive service and Keurig-made, ready-to-order coffee. We even offer an at-home concierge service to pick up local consignors’ merchandise.”

The store’s casual, boho-chic style and well-organized merchandising gives the place a well-heeled retail vibe that often takes shoppers by surprise. “A lot a people visit the store and don’t immediately know it’s a consignment shop. In fact, some customers have shopped our racks of designer clothes for as long as 30 minutes before they realize that our inventory is gently-used,” Bernstein says.

The 24-year-old entrepreneur says she made the guts move to open a new business based on her prior experience working in consignment. Although she is a graduate of Drew University, Bernstein admits she really can’t rely on her education (dual major in biology and Italian) to operate her business. However, she’s now considering going back to school for an advanced business degree.

“I started this venture with the vision of opening a warm, welcoming boutique. I chose the Mendham shopping center because there’s plenty of parking, a lot of foot traffic and close proximity to restaurants. Business has been great the first couple of years and I’m fortunate to work with a superb staff and wonderful consignors and customers.”

Tried & True is open each Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10-6; Thursday 10-7, Sunday 12-5 and closed on Monday.

How could you leave Restyle Renew in Denville off of this list–they even won your Best o FNew Jersey awards a few times. They moved last year to a new boutique location right on Broadway in the center of downtown Denville
