Barney’s II Bargain Store, Bloomfield
It doesn’t look like much from the outside. It’s tucked between a liquor store and Holsten’s, the old-school ice cream parlor where Tony Soprano may or may not have had his last meal. The storefront windows, sporting handwritten signs and a small, uninspired array of goods, are nondescript at best. But Barney’s II is on the regular route of bargain shoppers in the know. The inventory of first-quality, seconds and samples of designer shoes, handbags and apparel for the whole family changes weekly and is deeply discounted. There are plenty of deals for $50 and under. Barney’s II and its sister stores, Price Tag Bargain Center in Bayonne and Barney’s in Hillside, are open Thursday to Saturday. 1059 Broad Street; 973-338-7672—Deborah Carter

Century 21, Multiple locations
This deeply discounted, fashion-forward department store has something for everyone. Items are generally marked down 50 to 70 percent. Recent finds: Charles Jourdan satchel handbag for $199.97 instead of $425; Brian Atwood platform pumps for $139.97 from $300; Lucky Brand jeans for $45.97 rather than $89.50. The expansive men’s shop has everything from outerwear to underwear. Stock up on Isaac Mizrahi boxer briefs for $11.97 a pair, marked down from $28. The selection of designer ties, most priced around $12, is astounding. Locations in Paramus, Morristown and Elizabeth. —Lauren Payne

TJ Maxx/Marshalls, Multiple locations
Owned by the same corporation, these discount stores are well-known and well represented around the state. When a department store overbuys, you’ll see the savings here. The flagship, TJ Maxx, is primarily clothing, offering brand-name and designer fashions for 20 to 60 percent off department stores. Look for designer dresses: a Philosophy black sheath is $24.99 rather than $50, and a Cynthia Rowley drop-waist dress is $99.99 instead of $260. They also carry also fashion and fine jewelry. Marshalls is a bit more downscale; merchandise isn’t necessarily designer. It features apparel and items for the home, as well as beauty products, toiletries and odds and ends like phone cases.—LP
