Stunning velvet, in both traditional and crushed varieties, is a throwback 90s trend that’s made a big comeback this fall in the accessories and apparel markets. Burgundy, crimson, berry and wine-colored shoes (especially ankle boots!), tops, pants, dresses, jackets, gloves, scarves, hats, handbags and lingerie are the hippest looks right now.

Although this classic fabric is a beautiful choice for winter weddings with some brides choosing festive hunter green and cranberry gowns for their bridesmaids, we’re breaking all the rules because velvet is no longer considered only for fancy evening events or for “holiday-only” wearing.

Here are some fabulous options to freshen your autumn wardrobe. And, best of all, these fun fall looks will carry you through the holidays and the winter months. Some of my favorites hail from Nina, Summit by White Mountain and Yandy.

Master this trend by pairing glamorous burgundy with sparkly jewelry for a ho-ho-holiday vibe. To wear velvet without looking too formal, pair it with all black or even simple jeans and a white T. The good news is that this beloved fabric is widely available just about everywhere in crimson as well as always-appropriate black, navy, hunter green and winter white.

There’s always a good excuse to add a few new pieces of velvet to your closet.
