When Weequahic High School capped the football season with a 6–0 shutout of Raritan, it clinched the Central Jersey, Group 2 football title—and delivered the first football championship by a Newark School since 1975.

With several key players graduating, coach Altarik White’s savvy will be tested next season. “We’ll be a young team, but our guys will have the taste of a state title to motivate them,” he says. Current juniors Rashon Vines, Hassan Coleman, and Obadiah Dykes should provide leadership. Quashing press speculation, White confirms he’ll “definitely be coaching at Weequahic next season.”

Here’s hoping the positive trend continues for Weequahic when this month’s HSPA test results are released; last year’s language arts HSPA
saw a passing rate of 62 percent, up from 37 percent five years ago.
