Chef/owner Zod Arifai announced today that he will close his two lauded Montclair restaurants, Blu and Next Door, on August 30. "Montclair has been wonderful to me for the past 10 years," Arifai said in a press release. "We have some great eaters here who truly enjoy food, and it's been a pleasure cooking for them."

The James Beard Foundation today named the 2015 semifinalists for its 21-category Chef and Restaurant Awards. New Jersey had four semi-finalists, all but one predictable. The one that leaped out to me was Marie Jackson of Flaky Tart in Atlantic Highlands, nominated for Outstanding Baker in the U.S.

Executive chef Jean-Paul Lourdes, who brought new heights of artistry to Restaurant Latour at the Crystal Springs Resort, has stepped down. The native New Zealander is nearing the end of a three-year work visa, so the move is not unexpected. The new executive chef, already on the job and managing the transition, is Anthony Bucco. Over the last decade, Bucco, 39, has earned critical acclaim as executive chef of restaurants including Stage Left in New Brunswick, Uproot in Warren and the Ryland Inn in Whitehouse Station.

Early in Saturday night's American premiere of a work by the South African choreographer Robyn Orlin, the dancers of the all-male Senegalese troupe Jant-Bi begin to advance steadfastly toward and then literally into the audience--standing on the backs and armrests of occupied seats and striking a pose of invincible, unyielding bravado. At that point, who could guess that this pinwheeling, sometimes perplexing, affair at Montclair State's Kasser Theater would culminate in a flood of joy uniting audience and performers?
