About J. Mark Engel
A fellowship-trained and board-certified ophthalmologist, Dr. J. Mark Engel established University Children’s Eye Center in 1993 as a center of excellence in pediatric eye disease. His practice, which includes Dr. Sepideh Rousta, Dr. Nancy Sun and three optometrists, provides services from routine eye care to complex surgeries. Dr. Engel’s adjustable suture technique to correct childhood strabismus (crossed or wandering eyes) increases the surgery’s success rate. “To reduce trauma for children, we recommend fewer and less invasive procedures,” he says.
In offices designed with child-friendly equipment, families are advised of the full range of treatment options. Dr. Engel, who has published in leading academic journals, teaches at Rutgers RWJ Medical School and Wills Eye Hospital. He travels annually to Latin America with Healing the Children New Jersey. “It’s rewarding to care for kids who wouldn’t get medical attention otherwise,” he says.
