About Michael L. Bilof
Dr. Michael Bilof spent years as a vascular surgeon, but after seeing the amazing impact that bariatric surgery can have on the lives of patients with type 2 diabetes, his wife planted the seed that led to switching specialties. “It was a huge change, but I realized that she was right—it was what I needed to do with my life,” says Dr. Bilof.
He founded Garden State Bariatrics in 2007 and began offering lifesaving solutions for individuals with obesity and related diseases. “The American Diabetes Association has recommended metabolic surgery as a treatment for type 2 diabetes,” he says. “If someone is diabetic, surgery is definitely something he or she should consider.”
Dr. Bilof’s group is one of the few to offer the most advanced and cutting-edge bariatric surgery available—the duodenal switch. “It resolves or eliminates type 2 diabetes more than 90 percent of the time,” he says. The group also partners with Deborah Heart and Lung Center to provide a comprehensive bariatric program. Dr. Bilof serves as section chief of bariatric surgery at Deborah, where he also performs pro bono work for those in need. He practices with Dr. Basil Yurcisin and physician assistants Bella Baum and Michael Caromano.
