About Penny E. Defranco
“In the ever-changing world of medicine, we have managed to maintain a personalized and compassionate practice,” says Dr. Penny DeFranco, who founded South Mountain Nephrology in 2001 with the goal of providing exceptional medical care for people dealing with kidney disease. She is proud to deliver comprehensive nephrological treatment to adults of all ages, along with a highly individualized patient experience. Dr. DeFranco works with partner Dr. Ranka Samsa, physician assistant Olga Kosoy and an outstanding support staff.
Fellowship trained in nephrology, Dr. DeFranco has expertise in hypertension and kidney disorders, hypertensive kidney disease, edema (swelling), diabetic kidney disease, chronic kidney disease, end-stage renal disease, kidney stones and electrolyte imbalances, and treatments that include dialysis and kidney transplant management. She is recognized not only for her medical skill but also for her team approach to patient care. Her group’s mission is to make every patient’s visit comfortable, positive and informative. South Mountain Nephrology is affiliated with several hospitals and specialty care facilities and also services multiple dialysis units in Essex and Bergen counties.
Without exception, the practice focuses on meeting individual needs and emphasizes practical, real-life treatment programs based on a person’s unique circumstances. “Our patients are proactive in their own care. We work with them to craft treatments that fit their lifestyles,” says Dr. DeFranco. “What’s most rewarding is helping people improve their quality of life.”
