June 17th: Hunterdon Symphony – “ESCAPE WITH MUSIC”
The theme of Escape plays out in many ways throughout the program, from travel to foreign lands to fantasy adventures and dreams, but is perhaps best exemplified in the piece “Sull’aria” from Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro, an essential component of the famous “opera scene” in the film, “The Shawshank Redemption”. As the character Red narrates, “…those voices soared higher than anybody in a gray place dares to dream. It was like some beautiful bird flapped into our drab little cage and made those walls dissolve away, and for the briefest of moments, every last man in Shawshank felt free.” After the last sixteen months of lockdowns and quarantines, this is something we can all appreciate on some level. The aria will be sung by Amalia Crevani and Amy Suznovich.
Other works include: D’un Matin de Printemps, by Lili Boulanger; the finale from Beethoven’s Symphony No 5; Danzas de Panama, by William Grant Still; Symphony No 4 (Italian), mvt 1, by Felix Mendelssohn; Brahms Hungarian Dance No 1, and Lord of the Rings (Medley), by Howard Shore, with Amalia Crevani, Soloist, for “In Dreams”. You’ll also hear two small groups from the Symphony that formed during the last year: a Flute Quartet, and a brass quintet, The Pandemix.
Hunterdon Symphony is conducted by Lawrence Kursar. https://www.hunterdonmusicalarts.org
