The latest Steven Spielberg blockbuster that filmed all over New Jersey finally has a trailer, and a title to go with it.
On Tuesday, Universal Pictures dropped the first teaser for Spielberg’s sci-fi film Disclosure Day, starring Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson, Colman Domingo and Wyatt Russell as people at the center of a shocking discovery: humanity is not alone in the universe.
While no aliens are directly shown, the trailer features several unsettling hints at their presence, from Blunt’s meteorologist character stopping her weather report due to an ominous sound, to crop circles appearing, to a young girl’s bizarre interactions with animals. Later, O’Connor’s character insists the secret “belongs to seven billion people” and plans to reveal it “to the whole world, all at once,” while a nun remarks on the revelation’s spiritual magnitude, declaring, “Why would He make such a vast universe, yet save it only for us?”
Despite the trailer setting Disclosure Day in Kansas City, Spielberg shot large sections of his new movie in New Jersey this year in towns including Woodbine, Morristown, Jersey City, Montville, and Tuckahoe. UFO-centric sci-fi stories have long been a part of Spielberg’s historic filmmaking career, beginning with his earliest blockbusters like Close Encounters of the Third Kind and E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial and continuing into 2005’s War of the Worlds adaptation.
Having briefly grown up in Haddon Township, Spielberg would later film several movies in the Garden State, including the aforementioned War of the Worlds, Catch Me if You Can (2002), and 2021’s West Side Story (starring Jersey’s own Rachel Zegler). His Jersey childhood was also referenced at the start of 2022’s The Fabelmans, in which protagonist Sammy Fabelman begins taking an interest in filmmaking after watching The Greatest Show on Earth in a New Jersey cinema.
Disclosure Day will see Spielberg partner with multiple longtime collaborators, including co-writer Toby Kushner, cinematographer Janusz Kamiński, editor Michael Kahn, and composer John Williams, whose iconic scores include Jaws and Jurassic Park.
In recent years, New Jersey has seen an explosion in film and TV shoots here, thanks in large part to Governor Phil Murphy reinstating generous tax credits in 2018. Filmmakers to shoot here recently include Steven Soderbergh for 2024’s Presence and Paul Feig for The Housemaid, the latter of which premieres this weekend.
Disclosure Day will release in theaters on June 12, 2026.
