A Natural Way to Ward Off Sickness

Breaking down the benefits of elderberry.

I can’t stand being sick. (Who can?!) I also despise taking medicine, so I’m always looking for natural remedies that will nip my colds in the bud. Over the years I’ve tried everything on the Whole Foods shelves; more recently I became interested in elderberry.

On Instagram I discovered Jessica Morin, owner of Jersey-based Siren Essentials, who makes organic elderberry syrup and gummies. Her products’ simple ingredient lists include dried elderberries, clover honey, manuka honey, cinnamon stick and clove.

Jessica says elderberry is a proactive way to fight the flu and common cold.” Its berries and flowers are full of antioxidants and vitamins that are believed to naturally support a healthy immune system for adults and children. They can also decrease inflammation, fight allergies, combat stress and help protect the heart.

When it comes to these kinds of remedies, Jessica emphasizes the importance of buying fresh products and paying attention to their ingredients. (Watch out for added sugars and preservatives!)

I’ve been taking Jessica’s elderberry syrup twice daily, and my colds have been fewer and farther apart ever since.
