Adam Sandler’s New Jersey footprint is growing ever larger with his latest production—a movie starring his daughter.
Netflix just released the trailer for Roommates, a film set to stream April 17.
Sadie Sandler, 19, stars as Devon, a college freshman dealing with roommate drama. Chloe East plays her roommate, Celeste.
Per Netflix’s logline for the film, “a blossoming friendship spirals into a war of passive aggression.”
Sandler produced the movie through his Happy Madison production company.
Sadie previously appeared alongside her father in Happy Gilmore 2, which spent a record $152 million filming in New Jersey, from golf courses to local homes, schools and stores. The sequel, which premiered in July, is Netflix’s biggest United States opening for a film.
Sandler is known to work with many of the same actors across his films, and his family is no exception. Sadie has had a consistent presence in her father’s Netflix movies and films at large, with her credits including (but not limited to) Jay Kelly, Leo and You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah.
The New Jersey Motion Picture and Television Commission tells New Jersey Monthly that Roommates filmed at Drew University in Madison, Montclair High School and a private home in Montclair as well as Sustainable Studios in Moonachie.
Chandler Levack directed the film, which was written by Saturday Night Live writers Jimmy Fowlie and Ceara O’Sullivan.
Joining Sandler and East in the cast are Natasha Lyonne and Nick Kroll, who play her parents, Hannah and Brian; plus Billy Bryk (Wynonna Earp, Friendship), SNL star Sarah Sherman as a college dean, and former SNL Please Don’t Destroy member Martin Herlihy, who also appeared in Happy Gilmore 2.
Emmy-winning veteran actor Carol Kane is in the cast with another comedy great, Janeane Garofalo, a Newton native who grew up in Madison (here, she plays a professor).
Sadie Sandler isn’t the only celebrity daughter in Roommates. There’s also Bella Murphy (Coming 2 America), daughter of Eddie Murphy, and Jaya Harper (Teenage Emotions), daughter of Laura Dern and Ben Harper.
Also in the cast are Storm Reid and Bailee Madison.
