Virtual Recycling

Looking for an ecologically friendly way to unload your old computer? Call the New Outlook Pioneers of Morris County.

Composed mostly of current and former employees of Lucent Technologies, the group takes unwanted computers and refurbishes them, mostly for preschool kids. Lucent first sponsored the group when it formed in 1996, before members formed their own independent non-profit organization in 2002. Today the group’s roughly 25 members add new software and educational games as needed, and give the computers to schools, churches, and other groups throughout New Jersey that provide for individuals with special needs.

“There is a great camaraderie among the volunteers,” says Robert Hofacker, president of the organization’s Morris County chapter, which has donated about 5,000 computers since its founding. “We never had the opportunity to have computers in our classrooms, but that is something we can give to future generations.”
