Fashion divas had been waiting for months. Rebecca Minkoff, best known for her handbags, finally debuted her Elle studded-leather satchel and mini bag as we went to press. The bag is available in black, white and—exclusive to Neiman Marcus—scarlet.

One of this year’s boldest statements, the Elle bag was an immediate hit. It fits three of the season’s must-have trends. It packs big drama in a compact size. Its metallic accents are rocker chic. And its red hue is one of the most coveted colors for fall.

We interviewed Minkoff and her close pal, fashion blogger Bryanboy, at Neiman Marcus Short Hills during the launch party for the bag. (Bryanboy fans will be intrigued that he actually christened the handbag, naming it for his grandmother, Elle.)

Here’s what Minkoff, looking especially glammy in a fitted navy mini and sky-high strappy gladiators, shared with us…

Whose idea was it to create a scarlet bag?

Neiman Marcus asked me to design a red bag since red is the new neutral and it basically goes with everything. So we worked on it together and launched the Elle bag.

Are you wearing the Elle bag this week?
Of course! It makes a strong and polished statement whether I wear it with a T-shirt and jeans or a leather jacket and ankle boots. It also looks great with our Liman dress and layers of jewelry.

And if we peek inside?
I always carry a notebook and pen for jotting down design ideas, Waverly sunglasses and a lipstick.

What was the inspiration behind your fall collection of bags, shoes and clothing?
The cosmos! I got so excited about making styles and patterns that speak to space. That’s also how I arrived at the futuristic elements of the green and blue holographic bag and shoes that are another new look for us.
