Cape May, known as America’s first resort, can now claim to be first in the hearts of New Jersey beachgoers. The state’s southernmost Shore town sailed to victory in the championship round of New Jersey Monthly’s Battle of the Beaches, presented by Woodhaven Lumber & Millwork.
On its path to victory, Cape May outlasted 15 other beaches in the four-week, bracket-style competition. Each week, beaches advanced based on public voting at njmonthly.com. Cape May topped Beach Haven in the semi-final round two weeks ago, moving on to represent the Southern Shore side of the bracket in this past week’s championship round against Northern Shore winner Point Pleasant Beach.
In the end, it was all Cape May, a Jersey favorite since “sea bathing” became popular in the 1800s. Beloved for its Victorian architecture, wide beaches and exquisite dining scene, Cape May attracts beachgoers from throughout the East Coast and as far north as Canada. They come to enjoy horse-drawn carriage rides, historic tours, world-class birdwatching and unforgettable sunsets.
Cape May is well worth the visit, and well deserving of the title: New Jersey’s Best Beach, 2018.
