Lords Berkeley (1607–1678) and Carteret (1610–1680) They were much more than upper-class white males with fancy hairdos and flowing robes. They were the founders of this thing we call New Jersey, having been granted proprietorship of the land between the Hudson and Delaware Rivers by King James II in 1664. Without them, maybe we’d all be tawkin like Noo Yawkuhs. Perish the thought.
