Raymond Arthur Abbott, a Camden student, was the first-named plaintiff in the 1981 class-action suit that led to several epochal rulings by the state Supreme Court in the late 1990s. People debate how well the core decision (per-pupil spending in the 31 poorest districts should be the same as in the wealthiest) has met its qualitative goals. Though far from perfect, Abbott was a great leap forward.
