From playing the iconic Goat Boy on Saturday Night Live to a goofy stoner in the movie Half Baked, comedian and actor Jim Breuer has made audiences laugh for almost two decades. What his fans don’t know much about, however, is the real Jim Breuer—the dedicated husband to Dee, father of three daughters, and son of an ailing man.
In his autobiography, I’m Not High (But I’ve Got a Lot of Crazy Stories about Life as a Goat Boy, a Dad, and a Spiritual Warrior) (Gotham Books, $26), Breuer, a Chester resident, gives readers a peek into the life behind the jokes.
The characteristically droopy-eyed Breuer grew up in Valley Stream, New York, and in 1995 joined the ranks of high-profile SNL cast members like Tracy Morgan and Chris Farley. It was a missed opportunity to reconnect with the troubled Farley before his death that led Breuer to investigate his own spirituality.
But what makes this book different from the bevy of celebrity tell-alls? Well, how many comedians can you think of who would take their 87-year-old father on tour with them? Breuer did, for six weeks.
In I’m Not High, Breuer navigates through his life narrative with humor and self-awareness. Sure, he drops juicy tidbits and guffaw-inducing jokes as expected, but he ultimately delivers the message that family and finding your version of spirituality are what’s most important.
