On the mooooove!

A bull was on the loose in Newark on Thursday, traipsing around the tracks at Newark Penn Station and causing NJ Transit delays before being captured by authorities, New Jersey Monthly can confirm.

“At approximately 10:46 a.m. today, Thursday, December 14, 2023, police responded to Frelinghuysen Avenue near Victoria Street on a call that a bull was observed loose behind a building,” says Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé. “Members of the Newark Police Emergency Services Unit assisted Port Authority PD in locating the animal and contained it inside a fenced lot without incident.”

According to Fragé, the bull “will be retrieved and safeguarded by a local animal sanctuary.”

Newark Public Safety did not comment on where the bull came from.

No injuries were reported.

While train delays are nothing new for commuters, the reason for this morning’s hold-up certainly was. At around 11 am, NJ Transit shared a photo of the bull appearing to be underneath the platform at Newark Penn Station and said that trains between Newark Penn and New York Penn Station were subject to 45-minute delays.

The agency later posted the same image on Instagram with the cheeky caption: “Reminder! Only service animals accompanying customers with disabilities or their trainers, police dogs, and small pets in carry-on travel cages are allowed on-board NJ TRANSIT trains, buses and light rail vehicles.”

Commenters on Instagram had a field day with the post, writing things like, “What do you mean I can’t bring my emotional support bull on the train😕,” and, “Redbulls lose their mascot?” Others used it as an outlet to express frustration with train delays. “It’s always something.. tired of these bulls–t delays!” one commenter wrote.

Around 12:30 pm, a spokesperson for NJ Transit told us that trains were back on schedule.
