It’s the Sea Life: Shopping in Viking Village

With a range of antique shops, furniture stores and clothing boutiques, Viking Village isn't just for the fish.

Historic Viking Village in Barnegat Light, Long Beach Island, is many things: an active commercial fishing dock, a dining destination, and also, a shopper’s paradise.

The Seawife

Housed in the old Fenimore School House, a preserved historic site constructed in 1896, the Seawife is a whimsical antique and collectibles shop with a wide range of nautical, industrial and garden decor. The nineteenth-century Bull Run Barn, below, with its swinging white doors, boasts quirky lawn and outdoor furniture.

Wander down the narrow path through the surrounding overgrown garden, decorated with antique birdhouses, wrought-iron gates and quaint benches, all for sale. Inside the schoolhouse, there’s a mix of funky furniture, handmade candles, rustic signage, antique maps and more.

The Spotted Whale

Closest to the water is the Spotted Whale, a furniture and home decor shop with a preppy, nautical theme. With plenty of Barnegat Lighthouse-inspired plates, signs and shot glasses, the Spotted Whale is perfect for finding items tailored for a LBI beach house. Out front the shop sets up an array of outdoor furniture, rugs and Adirondack chairs, and inside is a bright, inviting space.

Vintage Grey

For an eclectic mix of accessories, women’s clothing and home decor, try Vintage Grey. Outdoor hammocks, handmade jewelry, ornate antique mirrors and Moroccan-inspired lamps are just some of the hidden treasures in this quaint shop, housed in the row of weather-washed fishing shacks next to Wink, another women’s boutique.

June Bug Boutique

The tiny June Bug Boutique stands alone in a converted fishing shack across from Vintage Grey and Wink. Resort wear forms the bulk of the inventory, with lightweight jumpsuits, sheer coverups and  high-waisted linen shorts among the racks. There’s also plenty of original jewelry, wide brim hats and quirky outdoor decor.

Stay caffeinated with an iced coffee from How You Brewin, and be sure to stop in Off the Hook after you’ve worked up an appetite shopping. The fresh tuna avocado taco with wasabi mayo is divine.

Need an excuse to head out to Barnegat Light? There’s the Historic Viking Village Art & Craft shows on July 12 and September 6, and also the Antique & Collectible shows, featuring more than 75 dealers, scheduled for August 2 and September 20. All shows are rain or shine and free admission.
