Deepak Chopra, a physician, New Age guru and prominent figure in alternative medicine, will be appearing at Loopwell, a new wellness space in Montclair, on Sunday, October 20.

The event, from noon to 4 pm, includes an Ayurvedic lunch, a sound-bowl and breathing session, and a mindfulness meditation group. Chopra will lead a guided mediation, and participants will receive signed copies of his latest book, Digital Dharma, which explores the fusion of quantum science and personal well-being.

Loopwell was founded last year by former ad executive Debbie Looney and her husband Sean, a marketing executive, to host holistic events, workshops and experiences for the public, along with corporate well-being events. Offerings include classes in nutrition, breathwork, movement and meditation, journaling, vision boarding, somatic tapping and human design.

The space, in a former garden center renovated to LEED standards, bills itself as a “first of its kind well-being social club.” Membership, which costs about $3,000 per year, is not required to attend events, but gives access to Loopwell’s morning movement and meditation classes, aromatherapy, community time and healthy snacks, along with a meditation room, library, relaxation spaces, and a mountain estate an hour north of Montclair. Members also have access to coaches who help them develop a plan to apply holistic principles to their daily life.

The cost for the Chopra event is $300 for members and $500 for non-members.

Chopra has written 90 books; his first, Ageless Body, Timeless Mind: The Quantum Alternative to Growing Old became an instant best seller and spurred a friendship with Michael Jackson and an interview with Oprah. Chopra has roots in the Garden State: He left India in 1970 to become a medical resident at Muhlenberg Hospital in Plainfield, according to Kanan Kapila, director of spiritual well-being at Loopwell.

The Chopra event is one of many appearances at Loopwell by authors, thought leaders and coaches in the wellness field, such as Dr. Sharon Malone, Dr. Aditi Nerukar and Dr. Judith Joseph. Practitioners come regularly to teach the popular Wim Hof method. At the next session on Sunday, October 27, participants will rotate between a hot sauna and cold immersion, and be guided with in-depth breathwork.

A portion of the proceeds from every corporate event are donated (or “looped”) back to a non-profit initiative or a Loopwell community event.
