Haute and healthy inspiration for the new year.

One way to live a luxurious life for less—and help the planet—is to drive an eco-friendly car. The Garden State has multiple programs that encourage and reward clean driving, including Charge Up New Jersey.

This initiative offers incentives of up to $4,000 for the purchase or lease of new, eligible zero-emission vehicles, including battery electric and plug-in hybrid electric cars. Such autos minimize dependence on costly gasoline and diesel and reduce air pollution and greenhouse-gas emissions.

Plus, manufacturers now offer environmentally conscious models that can travel extended distances, as well as options that are a lot more stylish than the traditional Prius.

Details about the state’s electric-vehicle incentive programs, including Charge Up New Jersey, can be found here.

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs let consumers buy food directly from farmers, and there are lots of them in New Jersey. Here’s how it works: You buy a share, before or during the growing season, and the farmer provides fresh produce and other food, like meat, during harvest.

The advantage for consumers—aside from helping your local farmer—is the ability to lock in a price for the entire season, thus avoiding supply chain-related and other price hikes that can impact supermarkets. Plus, all your produce is super fresh—and, in some cases, organic.

New Jersey has programs that incentivize the use of renewable energy, including solar and photovoltaic panels. Like eco-friendly cars, using these panels can decrease costs and help the environment.

Perks include lower energy bills and minimal maintenance after installation. There are also various tax credits for the program. Find more info at
