About Naveen Ballem
As leading experts in weight loss and robotic surgery, Dr. Naveen Ballem and Dr. Harvey Rainville provide comprehensive solutions for people struggling with obesity and all its related medical conditions. They work with an experienced team that includes Drs. Kartik Gohil and Brian Matier, nurses, dietitians, exercise therapists and psychologists.
A diplomate of the American Board of Surgery, Dr. Ballem is a leading expert in weight loss surgery. He serves as the president of the New Jersey Chapter of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, as well as on the national consensus committee where he has collaboratively published national guidelines for bariatric surgery. Dr. Ballem, the past president of the Essex County Medical Society, has extensively researched, published and presented at conferences, both at a national and international level.
A board-certified surgeon, Dr. Ballem has built the Bariatric Surgery Center at Clara Maass Medical Center (RWJ Barnabas), which since inception has achieved American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) “Center of Excellence” status, based on patient safety, staff education and patient outcomes. He is also director of bariatric surgery at Hunterdon Medical Center in Flemington.
Dr. Harvey Rainville is fellowship trained in both robotic and bariatric surgery. He has performed the most robotic bariatric procedures in the entire state of New Jersey according to Intuitive Surgical, the manufacturer of the da Vicini® Surgical System. “Some of the key advantages of robotic surgery, versus other approaches, include better visualization, improved instrument precision and less post-operative pain,” says Dr. Rainville. He is actively involved in training surgeons throughout the country in this innovative technique. Dr. Rainville is the medical director of robotic surgery at both Hackensack UMC Mountainside Hospital and Clara Maass Medical Center in Belleville.
“Dr. Ballem and I offer patients the absolute, most state-of-the-art approach to bariatric surgery,” says Dr. Rainville. “We employ new, less invasive procedures now available for revisional bariatric surgery, for those patients where their initial procedure may not have delivered the desired results. The surgical weight loss options we offer treat not only obesity, but all of the conditions related to it, such as type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, etc.”
Our team is grateful for being considered as two of New Jersey Monthly’s Top Doctors. “It is incredibly rewarding to work with each and every patient and their families to not only lose weight, but to ultimately help them live healthier lives,” says Dr. Ballem. Board-certified surgeons Dr. Kartik Gohil (who is fellowship trained in minimally invasive surgery) and Dr. Brian Matier (who is fellowship trained in colorectal surgery) have recently joined Drs. Ballem and Rainville. Contact Dr. Ballem’s office for a free informational seminar, “About Bariatric Surgery.”
