Quick Bite

A Bustling Brunch Spot in South Orange

Jackie & Son's extensive menu alludes to its owner's Israeli-Arab roots.

Style
: Big-windowed corner spot (featuring seats in the windows) with white walls, wicker chairs, potted plants. The bustling kitchen can be seen behind the counter.

The scoop: Chef/owner Jackie Podhurst, a South Orange resident, grew up in Manhattan, working in her family’s deli. She opened in April 2018, after the birth of her son, Santino. She took inspiration from her Israeli-Arab roots and the cooking of the women in her family, who still live in Israel.

The menu: The lengthy list is on the wall above the counter, where you place your orders. Breakfasts include French toast topped with raspberries and pistachios; omelets; or the Mediterranean shakshuka ($13). Lunch presents more than three dozen wraps and sandwiches, including the Little Italy (left), with burrata, roasted red peppers, tomatoes and balsamic. There’s a Cobb salad with bacon, hard-boiled egg and avocado. For dessert, try halava tahini brownies, banana bread and scones, all baked in house. Jackie & Son offers espresso, coffee, tea, juices and smoothies. There are daily soup specials, like Jackie’s Signature Lentil Soup.

Heads up: Delivery through Uber Eats. Podhurst also does catering.
