Style: Casual BYO. The owners did a complete re-do of what was, for a generation, the Chinese Lem’s Tea House.
Don’t Miss: Go with the barbecue squid appetizer ($7.95)or the Scalmon ($7.75), salmon and scallions teriyaki on skewers, so you can taste the teriyaki sauce. For the main course, try the Maki combo (tuna/salmon/avocado, $15.95) which comes with miso soup or salad and a rice-noodle appetizer. The sashimi regular ($20.95) is a panorama of bright raw fish (brown rice available). There is a regular sushi menu and two pages of inventive special rolls, such as the Maple roll (oyster tempura, mayo, scallion inside with spicy white tuna, eel sauce and tobiko on top, $14.95) and the Galaxy roll (tempura lobster and apple, topped with mango and wasabi tobiko, $14.95). Other picks include chicken, vegetable, beef and shrimp with Japanese curry ($12.95-$14.95), udon noodle hot pots ($12.95) and squid butter yaki ($15.95). Fried ice cream is the preferred dessert ($3).
The Scoop: When Mikado opened in 1999, there was a Benihana a mile up the road, so it never went the hibachi way, sticking to the sushi/sashimi/yakitori/tempura/teriyaki mix. (If you are in real need of hibachi, the owners have those at their Marlton and Maple Shade restaurants, but Cherry Hill is cozier.)
Head’s Up: For special nights, ask for the more intimate and authentic tatami rooms in the back of the restaurant.
