They say the reason Argentine steak is so good (some say the best in the world) is that its cattle graze on the country’s plentiful pampas grass, rather than being grain fed as American cattle are. The result is leaner, more flavorful and nutritious beef.

The asado, or Argentine barbecue, is ingrained in the national identity. It usually includes steak, sausage and blood sausage or morcilla, as well as sweetbreads and intestine. It is not for the faint of heart. Grilled sausage is often eaten on a crusty baguette with lettuce and tomato—called choripán, a combination of the words chorizo (sausage) and pan (bread).

Argentine cuisine is a blending of influences—in addition to steak, the Italian immigrants to the country brought pasta and pizza, which is often served at meals.

While there isn’t exactly an Argentine food enclave in New Jersey, many fabulous restaurants and bakeries are located in the northern part of the state. For incredible steak and cocktails head to La Fusta Argentine steakhouse in North Bergen.

For a casual vibe that includes pizza, pasta and a side of steak, head to Alberto’s Pizzeria in Belleville. El Tango Argentina Grill in Englewood and Tango Steak in Moonachie are sit-down restaurants that serve asados and are great places to watch Argentine soccer players like Lionel Messi dazzle.

The desserts are legendary and often include the ubiquitous dulce de leche. Head to Dulce de Leche on Bergenline Avenue in West New York, Recoleta Argentine Bakery-Café on Bergenline Avenue in Union City, or Rombiolo Bakery Café in Bloomfield for a treat.
