New Fabric and Wallpaper Going to the Dogs

Four-legged friends captivate the hearts of decorators and homeowners...

Jane Churchill's "Hot Dogs" wallpaper and fabric feature cool canines.

If you ask decorating experts about trends in wallpaper and fabric patterns, you’re likely to hear about the growing interest in critters, especially canines.  Sure, you can find an abundance of giraffes, zebras, birds and insects, but posh puppies are especially chic right now.

Check out a few of my four-legged favorites, all available through Ricciardi Brothers paint and wallpaper stores across New Jersey. Meg Tolkowsky, manager of the design showroom at the Morristown location (145 South Street, 973-538-3222), reports that her customers are enjoying this trend. In fact, Meg is creating a display of pooch-themed fabric and wallcovering in the front of the store. She’s even designing a dog house to greet window shoppers. “Until I started researching these wallpapers and fabrics, I didn’t realize how many dog-themed patterns were out there. And each one is cuter than the last,” Meg told me.

The image above is doggone adorable fabric and wallcovering by Jane Churchill, distributed by Cowtan and Tout. Pattern J801F-01, called “Hot Dogs,” comes in several colorways and is sure to add pizazz to any foyer, powder room, mudroom, office or bedroom.

Another of my top picks, below, is Thibaut’s “Best Friend” wallpaper, Pattern T-1040. You can snag it in six colors, but this true-blue shade is really dreamy. A black-and-white colorway also gets rave reviews because it’s neutral enough to use just about anywhere, including masculine spaces such as a men’s dressing area.

Also covered in canines is “Dog’s Life” by York.  I can visualize it adorning the walls of a mundane laundry room or home office, but any space would come to life with this wallcovering in Pattern AF1938.

Finally, one of the newest, most whimsical offerings hails from Sanderson in bright colors including yellow and red. It’s called “Dogs in Clogs” and it’s especially appropriate for the juvenile set. So if you’re papering a kids’ bedroom or bathroom, check out Pattern DLIT214012. Don’t forget the coordinating fabric!
